EIT engages with various strategic partners in order to deliver the best possible service to our clients and value to our stakeholders.
Transnet
The solution must be time and cost competitive with end-to-end road trucking, which requires significant planning and industrial engineering tied into a contractible service definition (using a dedicated TFR service code).
A key benefit is the terminal’s flexibility – should there be any form of breakdown on the railway line, the road is always available, and vice versa. Should Transnet not comply with the agreement, there is always a backup.
In this regard, Transnet will:
- Provide trains on a reliable and predictable basis, with a dedicated fixed shuttle service between Durban Port and EIT.
- In phase one, Transnet will supply 50 wagon block shuttle trains between Durban and Estcourt on mainline service that is not a hook-and-haul, with EIT providing all the shunting services.
- In phase two, EIT has entered into an agreement with Transnet in which EIT will own its own rolling stock, with Transnet supplying a hook-and-haul service.
- Provide hook-and-haul traction services from the EIT siding to Kings Rest yard in Durban Container Terminal (DCT).
Collaborative potential between EIT and Transnet
The collaboration between EIT and Transnet delivers many potential benefits to multiple stakeholders:
- Development of a black empowered logistics hub on Africa’s busiest logistics corridor
- Support road to rail initiatives contemplated by the Transnet Market Demand Strategy
- Reduce rail operating cost on the Container Corridor
- Improve logistic efficiency on the Container Corridor
- Create significant employment and black empowerment SMME service, while supporting opportunities and jobs in a rural town which is desperate for development
- Reduce road truck trips on a critical section of the N3
- Reduce the cost of doing business on the Container Corridor
